Long story short, the fiancé was taking the 2012 A3 (black) the other day to go shopping. Someone turned left in front of her (she had the green) and put a rather large but not damaging scrape down the front bumper. She was honorable about it and the insurance has paid us to get it fixed. No big deal.
While at the body shop I happened to ask the service rep about painting the chrome grille and fog surrounds while they were at it, something I've always wanted to do to the car. He mentioned since they were taking off the bumper anyway and would have to remove them for paint that it wouldn't be a big deal to hit them with the gun. They would prep the chrome surface and hit it in body color. In short, they'd do it for free included in the other work. So, Since it's not costing anything, to blackout or not to blackout?

I wouldn't personally do it, but I like seeing it. I think it's a pretty tasteful way to customize your ride.

Black it out! I'm a huge fan of that look, especially on that car. The money usually spent to do something like is in the labor to take the part off, so if it's already coming off, go for it! And post pics.

I would personally keep the chrome to accentuate the grill, but it blacking it out would definitely be unique.

Black it out, but don't murder it out. keep the lights stock color, that type of thing, but get rid of the chrome

That particular style of Audi looks 1000x better with blacked out trim. It was even a factory option with the "Titanium" package along with special wheels (for A4) and a darker headliner.
The factory black trim was piano black however, not rattle-can matte.

Blackout. Blackout. Blackout.
(i'm chanting)
Blackout. Blackout. Blackout.
But just the grille and the fogs. I'm tired of murdered out everything.

What color are your wheels? If they are silver, either leave as is or put a little tint so it's a black chrome. If the wheels are black or dark gray then by all means do so.

The wheels are painted silver, I wouldn't mind hitting them in black too, but the girl thinks it's too boy racer. I understand. These are the factory s-line wheels it has:

If you are going to mod it, I'd suggest black wheels with a chrome lip, and some blacked-out trim, except for the grille surround trim.

Ahh yes they did, I thought I remembered that. Take his advice.

Yeah, the blacking would stop at the grille trim and the fog housing.

Depends.
Removing Chrome and going to black, I'm all for.
Replacing glass with blacked-out sections, blacking out signals and rims, etc.? No, that's 'murdered out', and it only works on certain cars. Of which most audis are not.

Yeah, I think it would look interesting in body color, I've seen a few that have done with the flat black, but I think the body color black would make it feel a bit more integrated.

Frankly, I'd do a gunmetal look on the wheels and trim. It would look really cool, but not be all blacked out and "boy racer". Those wheels would look so good in a darker finish.

blackout, but bring the wheels with it.

Both are good options, but if I had to choose I wouldn't chrome it.
And if I did want to chrome it, I would use PlastiDip simply because it's supposed to be easily removable and it's cheap.
I'm thinking of dipping the roof and mirrors on my car but I can't decide..

Piano black was the OEM color for the trim package I mentioned, can't get more integrated than that.

Black that shit out right now. It won't look "murdered out," it will look awesome. I debated about keeping chrome grills on my previous black BMW and as soon as I put the black ones in I regretted not doing it sooner.
Do not paint your S-line wheels black, this isn't 2006.

In my opinion you should leave as is and later on (at your home) PlatiDip those chromes. That way when you have to sell your car you can just unwrap it to it's original chrome beautifullness.

I think the stock black-out looks awesome, but most aftermarket black-out jobs look trashy (see?). Is the body shop reputable?

Yes, they've done some work on the car before when a neighbor hit it. Looks great, It would just be the trim surround on the grille and the fog housing, no wheels.
